Today was just about flying home. Sigh. We sat around waiting for the time we had to leave to get to the airport, with semi-heavy hearts. In a sense, we were sort of ready to go home. Mike had planned for us to wind down in Oahu with no real plans, which helped facilitate that "going home" mindset. But at the same time, who wants to leave Hawaii to get back to work and real life? Still, we tried to soak in as much Hawaiian air and sun as we could, and we spent the morning sitting outside at Kahala's Beachside Bar, where we had our lunch (yup, you guessed it, hot dogs!) and our last drink on Hawaiian soil. We had to walk past the dolphin's lagoon and the outdoor aquarium/pond to get to and from the Beachside Bar, and there was this funny black fish with a blue streaks along the top/bottom (maybe it's a black durgon, aka triggerfish?). It kept swimming with the top fin fanning away out of the water...come on, fish! Don't you know you should go in the water, not skim about the top of it? Doesn't that make you more of a target for seabirds? Well, we really liked him.
We got home in the evening after the 5 hour flight, and we watched a couple of movies (Lilo and Stitch! in honor of our trip), and we were definitely a bit sad to be back on the mainland. But things weren't too bad because Barley came to greet us! He was so curious, smelling all our bags and probably wondering "Where the hell have you been, and how did you pick up so many amazing scents I have never even fathomed!" Or maybe he was just saying "Smells. Many smells. Intrigued. I like." Whatever. I put some of the shell / kukui leis on him. Man, he would love to go to Hawaii. I wish we can take him sometime...?
Then, the next day (thus the half), it was just relaxing with Mike before he had to fly back to Los Angeles. It was so good to hangout together for so long, and so sad to be apart again. We really got used to being together almost non-stop since before the wedding! Even though we both went back to work for a little while, I visited that interim weekend, and then he came up foor the July 4th weekend, and we haven't been apart since. This long-distance thing is the dumps. Still, we tried to make the most of it and we tried one of the cigars -- pretty good! Light, woody, and easy. Barley did not like it, and he retired further away from the smoke. I also sat admiring the koa wood bracelet Mike helped me pick out. It really shone in the sun. Great momento!
I'll miss you, Mike! But I suppose Barley will keep me company until I see you again (not that I'm complaining about having him!!) This was the most amazing trip ever, and I'm so glad we got to experience it together. I love you very much. You did a great job planning everything. How are we ever going to top this?
Sadly, I am not sure when I'll get to see you next. Hopefully soon! It's bad enough being apart again after having the joy of each other's company for so long. But what makes it worse is (what's the opposite of a cherry on top?) ... I have to go back to work tomorrow! :(
